OSN Service Monitoring Bundle: Network Service Monitoring
The Network Service Monitoring solution utilizes the open source application MRTG, a flexible data gathering and graphical representation tool. It generates HTML web pages containing images which provide a "Live" visual representation that can report any SNMP metric, including gathered OSN-enabled router statistics such as network utilization, errors and packet load.
The solution consists of a Perl script that uses SNMP to read the traffic counters produced by the router and a fast C program that logs the traffic data and creates high quality graphs representing the traffic on the monitored network connections. These graphs are embedded into web pages which can be viewed from most web browsers.
In addition to a detailed daily view, MRTG also creates visual representations of traffic seen during the last seven days, the last five weeks and the last twelve months. This functionality is made possible by the MRTG log of all the data that it has pulled from the router. The log is automatically consolidated so that it does not grow over time, but continues to hold all the relevant data for all the traffic seen over the last two years.
MRTG monitors traffic, any SNMP variable and data gathered by an external program. It is typically used to monitor activities such as system load, login sessions and modem availability, and can allow two or more data sources to be accumulated into a single graphical view.
Features and Benefits
| Feature | Benefit | Description |
| Automatic network interface identification | Easy to use | Identifies automatic router interfaces by IP address, description and Ethernet address; data is visualized in the live reports |
| Consistent log file size | Scalable | Application log files do not expand due to the use of a unique data consolidation algorithm |
| Standard scripting tools | 100% Standard- based | MRTG is highly configurable and written using industry-standard scripting language (Perl) and can be extended to report many different types of metrics |
| Performance-optimized software | Scalable and high- performing | Time-critical routines are optimized to run on an OSN operating system |
| 64-Bit counter support | High-performing | MRTG can read 64-bit counters; counter wrapping and wrong interpretation of graphs is no longer applicable |
| Automatic configuration | Easy to install and configure. | A set of configuration tools make configuration and setup very simple |
| Portable graphics | Low bandwidth, high-quality viewing | Graphics are generated directly in Portable Network Graphics (PNG) format using open source GD library |
